4K detail ahead and behind
The VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH records both road views in 4K at 30FPS, so rear footage gets the same resolution as the view ahead. Whether you're reviewing a close following vehicle or an incident at an intersection, the front and rear recordings provide complementary context.
This package includes a front camera and a rear camera, with no cabin camera. The front CPL-200 filter is included. A memory card, parking-mode hardwire kit, rear CPL-600 filter and BTR200 remote are sold separately.
Key features
-
Dual 4K recording: both cameras record 3840 × 2160 at 30FPS using 8MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensors, with 1/1.8-inch sensor format.
-
Wide road coverage: each camera has a 140° field of view and F1.8 aperture to capture surrounding traffic.
-
HDR on both cameras: helps balance bright headlights and darker surroundings. Readable detail still varies with speed, distance, glare and lighting.
-
GPS context: saved recordings can include location, speed and time. The GPS mount supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou.
-
Local Wi-Fi access: connect a nearby phone through the VIOFO app over 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi to adjust settings, review footage and download clips.
-
Voice commands and spoken notifications: supported commands can lock video, take photos or start recording. Status notifications help flag camera and memory-card issues.
Parking recording requires compatible power
The optional VIOFO HK4 or HK6 hardwire kit connects through the GPS mount and cuts power at the selected battery-voltage threshold. Choose HK6 if you want a vehicle-voltage stamp on recordings. Connect constant power, ignition and ground correctly, select a suitable cutoff, and test transitions between driving and parking.
-
Buffered event detection: saves 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after detected activity.
-
Time-lapse: records continuously at a selected low frame rate without audio. Night Vision is available with 1FPS time-lapse.
-
Low-bitrate recording: saves continuous video and audio in smaller files.
All-night recording is not guaranteed. Runtime depends on the power source, battery condition, cutoff, temperature and recording settings. The supercapacitor is not a battery for extended recording.
Parking-impact notifications appear on the camera at its next startup, with sound or a spoken prompt if enabled. They are not remote phone alerts. The manual excludes impacts within three minutes of entering or leaving parking mode from protected event recordings to reduce false alerts.
Parking geofencing supports up to three areas where the camera powers off instead of recording while parked. Outside those areas, or with weak or lost GPS reception, it enters parking mode. Test each location and setting before relying on it.
Storage and important recordings
Use a high-endurance microSD card up to 512GB, sold separately. All connected camera files share the card. Loop recording overwrites older ordinary footage when space runs out. Protect incident clips using the emergency-lock button, a supported voice command or G-sensor impact detection, then export important originals promptly. Protected files still occupy finite space. Review recordings and card health regularly, and back up clips before formatting.
Privacy mode retains only the latest four ordinary files in this two-channel setup. Leave it off if you need the normal recording history. Export important recordings before changing settings or formatting the card. This model does not support external SSD recording or 4K at 60FPS.
Phone access and controls
Wi-Fi works with a nearby phone, not as remote monitoring. This model has no LTE modem or cloud service for remote viewing, live vehicle tracking or parking push alerts. GPS information belongs to saved recordings. Download clips to view their GPS map in the VIOFO app.
Wired phone transfer requires a supported USB-C phone and a USB 2.0 Type-C to Type-C data cable. VIOFO specifies 5V / 2A output support and reports up to 20MB/s on supported iPhones. Compatibility and speed vary; USB-C alone does not establish support. Use local Wi-Fi or a card reader with the camera off if wired transfer is unsupported. The supplied short data cable is for file access and updates; use the vehicle charger or hardwire kit for normal recording power.
Voice commands support English, Chinese, Russian and Japanese; other interface languages use English commands. Spoken notifications are separate. Camera buttons and the optional BTR200 remote provide physical controls. Set up controls while parked.

Installation, filters and firmware
Keep lenses clear of tint edges, mirror housings and window obstructions. Route the rear cable clear of airbags and moving parts. Clean both windows and lenses, adjust the included front CPL-200 using live view, and check saved footage in daylight and after dark. The rear camera uses optional CPL-600, not the ordinary A229 Pro rear camera’s CPL-300. Buildings and windshield coatings can affect GPS reception; check the time zone and daylight-saving settings during setup.
Use Ultra-specific firmware: FWA229U.bin for the front and the Ultra-specific EthcamTxFW file for the rear. Pro, Plus and Tele files are not substitutes. Back up recordings and settings, maintain stable power and follow the exact update instructions. Current front updates reset settings and advise against downgrading.
